Caring for Kids' Teeth
2010-04-12
Have you ever heard people that you need to take care of your teeth because you only have one set of them? While this is true for adults, kids may call your bluff when the tooth fairy comes and leaves money under their pillow. While kids do have their baby teeth, it is still very important to take proper care of them. Caring for teeth is a life long adventure. And when we say life long, we mean it. If kids don't take care for their baby teeth there is a good chance they will not take care of their adult teeth either.
- Care for a Baby's Gums - Proper oral health should start even before a child's first tooth comes in. After a baby feeds take the time to wipe their gums with a soft, clean and damp gauze pad.
- Remove the Pacifier - While the good old "binky" may help calm a crying infant the long term affects of sucking on a pacifier are definitely more costly. Children who use a pacifier or suck their thumb have a higher chance of requiring braces so remove the pacifier and try some other calming methods.
- Lead By Example - Do you want your kids to have good oral care habits? Show them how to properly care for their teeth by doing it yourself. Make oral hygiene a nightly ritual - even before your kids first teeth come in - to ensure that they will properly care for their teeth.
- Avoid Sugary Snacks - We can't say it enough - if you want to avoid cavities and costly trips to the dentist you need to avoid giving your kids sugary foods and drinks. Feed your child fresh fruits and vegetable as snacks and make sure they brush after every meal.
- After a Lost Tooth - While many kids look forward to a visit from the tooth fairy many children don't like the idea of sore gums. After they lose a tooth plan meals with softer foods and cut harder foods into smaller, bite-size pieces so your child can chew them with their back teeth.
Visiting the Dentist
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry children should make a trip to the dentist no later than the appearance of their first tooth. While many kids are afraid of the dentist many dental offices are geared towards children - equipped with fun artwork, video games and more. Try to make your child's first trip to the dentist as fun as possible to avoid problems later.
It doesn't matter how old your child is annual trips to the dentist should be a high priority. Visits to the dentist can be very costly, however, so it is important to find a family dental insurance plan to help cover the expenses. DentalInsuranceQuotes.com allows you to search for dental insurance with the click of a mouse and provides you with multiple affordable dental insurance quotes so you can choose the policy that is right for your family.
