Cosmetic Options That May Be Covered By A Dental Insurance Plan

2010-12-17

Dental insurance is a significant asset for people who might not otherwise make regular visits to the dentist. It helps with the cost of maintaining good dental health and with regular visits and services. While getting a dental insurance quote is an important thing to research before buying, be sure to understand what features the policy offers and what it does not; like cosmetic options for example.

There are many procedures that a normal dental policy will not cover and you need to know what they are. Most dental insurance quotes include coverage for routine preventive care and oral health maintenance. A visit once or twice each year, regular cleaning and filling cavities, etc. are all considered normal procedures and will be covered according to the terms of your policy. It is always smart to familiarize yourself with what your coverage includes and what is excluded.

As a rule, cosmetic options are not covered in a dental insurance quote. There are exceptions of course. These fall into the gray area and can be subject to the interpretation of your carrier. Braces for example, are a covered procedure in some plans but not in others. You often have the option to include orthodontic coverage when you buy the policy. Under certain circumstances, veneers may be a covered procedure; again depending on the particulars. Usually repair of a chip or other obvious damage to a front tooth is covered, at least in part.

Disfigurements and deformations caused by an accident or injury are most commonly covered by dental insurance policies unless specifically excluded. There are instances in which a health insurance policy might be the more appropriate option to follow. In a case where severe dental and/or jaw problems result from an automobile accident or several teeth are broken in a fall; coverage is just as likely to come from a health plan as from a dental plan. Read the declaration page of your policy carefully and check to be sure of coverage before going ahead with any cosmetic procedure.

Many cosmetic options for dental insurance are available but not as part of a regular dental insurance quote. They are either added on to a plan or are purchased separately. In fact, you can buy a policy that specifically covers you for all types of cosmetic procedures; voluntary and necessary, cosmetic and aesthetic. All you have to do is find them and pay for them. Add-ons are costly when allowed.

A better option for many people is to find a dental plan that combines both cosmetic and dental insurance coverage. In that way, coverage is assured regardless of what might be required or desired.
