While many people put a strong emphasis on obtaining health insurance, dental insurance sometimes takes a backseat. However, dental insurance should be just as important to obtain as health insurance because dental care affects a person's health too. Additionally, most dental insurance plans have reasonable monthly premiums while dental insurance benefits remain fairly extensive. Even if an individual believes they have perfect teeth and/or do not need to visit the dentist often, it's still a good thing to have in case a dental emergency arises. Even a simple dentist visit can be quite expensive for someone who doesn't have dental insurance, so if something serious comes up, the costs are that much higher. But when obtaining dental insurance, it's vital to have certain dental insurance benefits to ensure an individual is fully covered.
Bi-annual Cleanings
Although most plans come equipped with this benefit, it's still important to ensure that it's on the policy. Dental insurance plans vary, so it's critical that a thorough review of the policy is conducted in order to ensure that bi-annual cleanings are included. Unlike with health insurance and health in general, dental cleanings should be conducted twice a year - every six months to be exact. To ensure dental health, teeth need an in-depth, deep cleaning so that any gums remain healthy and so that dentists can prevent any dental disease from occurring or growing.
Extensive Dental Procedures
On most plans, basic preventative procedures like cleanings, X-rays and checkups are included. However, basic cleanings may not be the only thing an individual will need to go to the dentist for. In some cases, when a regular cleaning is done, the dentist will see some gum recession or decay going on that requires a deep cleaning. Deep cleanings aren't covered under basic plans and will have to be paid out of pocket if it's not part of the policy. Although a more robust dental insurance policy will not cover deep cleanings fully, they will pay a large percentage of it if it was included as part of the plan. That requires a person to ask for a more extensive plan.
If a root canal or tooth extraction needs to be conducted, individuals will want to make sure they have the extra coverage. On basic plans, insurance companies will only pay a very small percentage of the bill, which could mean fronting hundreds of dollars. However, with a more extensive plan, the insured pays less out of pocket and is able to move ahead with the procedure.
Cosmetic add-ons can also be included for an extra charge, but the above benefits must be in any plan to stay healthy.
