How Dental Insurance Quotes Cover Existing Procedures

2010-06-22

Dental insurance is one type of health insurance that is often overlooked by families just getting their healthcare options together and in line. Many young families and parents do not realize that standard individual or employer-sponsored health care plans do not cover dental procedures, and that more often than not separate dental insurance quotes must be sought out. These dental plans operate almost exactly like standard health plans, and come with things like exclusions, yearly maximums, and minimum deductibles. They also come with a list of "existing procedures" that they will cover on a monthly or yearly basis. As with all types of insurance it pays to know what will be covered, when it will be covered, and for exactly how much.

Standard types of existing procedures listed in dental insurance quotes will include things like regular teeth cleanings, x-rays, and cavity fillings. Typically, dental insurance companies will divide the procedures that they will pay for into three categories - preventative procedures such as cleanings and fluoride treatments, maintenance procedures like simple tooth extractions or root canals, and major procedures such as crowns, bridges and dental implants. Each category of procedure will have a different dollar value attached to it that the company will pay out for, and will also stipulate how many of a certain type of procedure will be paid for in a particular span of time.

As well, most dental plans set their payout limits using the standard of UCR, or what is usual, customary, and reasonable. There is no universal way in which this concept is defined, and therefore no absolutes on how a company chooses to implement it. What this means for patients and clients is that the company will decide how much of a procedure they will pay for based on how usual, customary, and reasonable it is. But even for the most ordinary of procedures, for example a teeth cleaning, the company may not choose to pay the full value. This is entirely up to them, and they are in no way obligated to match other companies or offers that are on the market. UCR will not typically cover any portion of things like cosmetic changes or procedures that are not recommended by a dentist within the network.

Having the right dental insurance is important, and it is crucial to understand what existing procedures will be covered and which will have to be paid for partially or entirely out of pocket. The dental insurance market is highly competitive, so with a little bit of work and good luck, a family can find a quote and a plan that suits their needs currently and will grow with them in the future.
