How To Get Dental Insurance For Economically Sensitive Families

2010-12-21

If you become unemployed or are otherwise experiencing an economically sensitive time, even the most necessary of expenses can become a burden, including health insurance. Luckily, there are ways to obtain dental insurance and other kinds of coverage, whether you are making less money or none at all.

Although many Americans have been laid off, there are also many who are still employed, but working much less than before. Less income is the obvious result, but another effect can be the loss of benefits due to part time status-or that benefits have become too costly within the employer's plan to stay in the program. If this is your scenario, consider shopping around for less expensive plans within the employer benefits package, or less comprehensive coverage. Although this may seem at first counter-intuitive, think about it a bit: are you a generally healthy individual who only gets sick once or twice per year? If so, maybe you could change your coverage to a basic plan that still covers emergencies, but has higher co-pays when you go to the doctor. If you have not taken a close look at your benefits recently (and what you are truly shelling out for) take a look and see if you even need the same coverage that you originally signed up for.

For some, picking an employer plan is not an option. If your family is experiencing serious hardship, consider applying for state-run programs such as Medicaid. Each state in the country has its own site where you can get information and enroll at a facility in your county. You will need to be earn under a certain amount of money per month, which varies by state, but with a family, the limit is higher than it would be for an individual. Medicaid typically covers hospital and primary care visits, dental care and many other issues. Search the web for Medicaid in your state to find out how to enroll.

Another option is the insurance search engine. Certain sites cater specifically to finding you dental insurance. You will need to list your name, date of birth, whether or not you are a recent tobacco user, and if you are a full time college student (and submit this information for others to be covered). Results will come up with available plans, which you can then rank by price, ratings, company or other criteria.

No matter how economically sensitive your budget, there are options available to give your family at least basic coverage for a minimal fee-if not for free. Doing the research to find a plan to cover yourself and loved ones can help you gain peace of mind.
