How Your Dentist Makes A Living Through Dental Insurance Plans

2011-06-28

The insurance industry is a difficult one to maneuver, and people often get confused as to how exactly it works. That may be the point of the system being so complicated, but it is still important to know some of the ins and outs of the industry so you know what you're paying for. Dental insurance plans are usually the plans that are left out of some people's insurance packages. Many people believe that they will not need the dentist past their bi-annual checkup and cleanings, so they opt to not have it as part of their plan. The truth of the matter is that dental insurance is just as vital as your health insurance. In fact, the two go together in maintaining a healthy body, so it's important to get dental insurance on your plan. What some people may not know is that dentists essentially make their living through dental insurance plans. So the dental insurance rates you pay that may seem exorbitant, are actually necessary for the dentist to continue operating.

The way most businesses work, if they are for profit, is that there are services or products which they sell and that people pay directly to them for. Sometimes there are grants and investors that provide the business with the money, which is how they are able to operate, pay employees and produce the products or provide the services. However, as many people have noticed, when you go to the dentist, you normally don't pay anything, or you pay a small amount for many of the procedures that were performed. For example, the copay for most dentists is about $20, and that includes cleanings and x-rays. Even if you have more work done and you happen to have more extensive dental insurance plans, the amount you pay seems really low for the amount of work performed.

The reason this happens, and the reason you are able to take advantage of such low dental insurance rates and copays is that the dentists are essentially paid from the dental insurance companies themselves. Through partnerships, dental insurance companies and dentists have come up with plans that help both parties out. As a result, the dentist offers certain services and procedures to the insurance carrier at discounted or lower rates that the carrier then passes onto the customer. So when you go in and pay your small amount to the dentist, the office then makes a record of the procedures and sends a bill to the insurance company. Since you are paying a monthly rate to your carrier, the carrier has the funds to pay for the procedures. That is essentially how the dental system works.
