Teaching Your Children About Good Dental Hygiene

2010-07-17

When investigating dental insurance options for your family, it's important to get a number of dental insurance quotes so you can compare. One of the items in your quote will be coverage for your children. The more they know about good dental hygiene, the better it will be long term.

The most important part of teaching your children about good dental hygiene is to set a good example. If they see you doing the things that are part of taking care of your teeth and mouth, they will do the same things consistently without balking. Explain to them that brushing when they get up, when they go to bed, and after each meal is important because it removes excess food and acids and protects the enamel of their teeth. Likewise, flossing is important and necessary because it removes particles of food that their tooth brushes miss as well as stimulating gum tissue to promote healthy gums. It's also important for them to rinse well because that will ensure that any residue or particles are swept away.

There are other things your children can do within the terms of your dental insurance coverage. Things like wearing a mouth guard when playing contact sports, for example, are important because they keep teeth from being chipped, cracked, or severely jolted in a collision. Not chewing ice is another thing they can do in the name of good dental hygiene. Chewing ice can cause tiny cracks in the enamel of their teeth, cracks that opportunistic bacteria can take advantage of as a place to grow and cause harm. Your children should also know that if a tooth is loosened from an injury, they should tell you immediately and leave it alone. Under no circumstances should they wiggle it to "check" on it. And if a tooth is knocked out, they should wrap it in a moist paper towel and bring it straight to you. The same goes for a loose baby tooth that's just itching for a visit from the Tooth Fairy. They should keep their hands out of their mouth and let the tooth come out when it's ready.

It's also important when teaching your children about dental hygiene, that they understand their teeth literally have to last a lifetime. Their baby teeth will be replaced by grown up teeth, but the spaces those teeth fill are the spaces the baby teeth are in now. Each tooth is a holder and each is important for proper health as they age. Once your children have good brushing and flossing habits, they will have better checkups. Your dental insurance quotes should reflect that.
