Things the Dentist Doesn't Want You to Know

2010-04-15

Odontophobia, or dentophobia is the name given to dental anxiety or the pathological fear of the dentist. While most people do not suffer from this disorder it is estimated that nearly 75% of adults in the United States experience at least some level of fear when it comes time to sit in the dental chair. As it turns out some of these anxieties may not be unfounded, however. Following are several things some dentists don't want you to know and even more reasons to research a dentist before becoming their patient.

  1. Lack of Education - We are not saying that dentists are out there practicing illegally. The field of dentistry has changed a lot since most dentists graduated dental school and continues to change every year. From dental techniques to new tools and pain reduction dentists get most of their new information from continuing education courses. If the dentist you are considering isn't logging close to 100 hours a year you may want to reconsider.
  2. Poor Quality Labs - Almost as important as the dentist is the lab they use to create the crowns, dentures and appliances they use in the office. To improve the bottom line many dentists resort to using foreign labs to get better rates. Ask the dentist's office which lab they use and if it is not US-based keep looking.
  3. Use of Mercury - Many dentists still use mercury fillings for their patients. This is because the American Dental Association has not seen a cause for concern. It is important to remember, however, that mercury is toxic. If you ingest mercury you are supposed to call poison control and visit an emergency room immediately. Why would you want a permanent filling made of the same substance?
  4. Sleep Apnea - Did you know that many dentists are able to prescribe sleep apnea devices? Did you also know that just because they are does not mean they are qualified? If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea ask the dentist if they are a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and if they attend annual meetings. If the dentist is qualified they will have no problems answering these questions.
  5. Dental Insurance - Think your dental insurance policy will keep you from paying high prices for dental work? Before making your appointment ask the dental office if they accept the insurance you have. Dentists will often perform work and think about payment later. This means you could be forced to pay out of pocket. Asking this simple question will help ensure you are covered.

Whether you currently have a dentist or are looking for a new one having a reliable dental insurance policy will help make the search easier.
