Three Ways To Save Money On Your Dental Plan

2010-10-05

Dental insurance quotes may not clearly describe the total policy information. Often, what looks to be the cheapest plan consists of high deductibles and co-payments. Because of this, affordable insurance may not be easily discernible, making it imperative for an individual to research all available options to save money on a dental plan.

There are several components of a dental plan that influence the total cost of a plan. These include the monthly premiums, dental co-payments and separate co-payments for X-rays and other tests. HMO and PPO dental plans are available, but PPO plans typically cost more.

There are many things that can be done to reduce the cost of dental insurance. Of these, three in particular warrant attention because they are easily implemented and are usually made available to all potential policy holders.

The first step to obtaining affordable insurance is to choose an HMO plan. While an HMO dental plan is the same as an HMO medical plan, i.e., there are a limited number of dentists covered under the plan, dental HMO plans are often less exacting, as individuals usually visit dentists less often than physicians. Therefore, even if the choice of dentists is limited, there is likely to be at least one acceptable choice through the plan.

HMO plans often cost much less than PPO plans because the insurance companies have negotiated lower rates with the dentists that accept their plan. Although HMO plans require an individual to seek general dentistry assistance before seeing a specialist, this does not pose any specific difficulty since this standard procedure regardless of whether insurance is involved.

The second step when obtaining dental insurance quotes is to choose a dental plan that is associated with your medical plan. Often, medical insurance companies will discount one or both plans if a customer purchases additional coverage. Therefore, it is in an individual's best interest to attempt to combine all potential types of coverage into a single policy. Moreover, while rare, some insurance companies combine medical and dental deductible, meaning that any out-of-pocket expenses paid by a policy holder would be counted toward the same deductible. This may make it easier for a policy holder to reach the yearly deductible faster and begin to receive more benefits from the company.

Finally, an individual may choose to obtain a dental plan that only covers emergencies. Routine dental examinations and cleanings are usually relatively inexpensive. However, emergencies such as tooth extraction, repairing a chipped tooth or other damage to teeth that must be repaired are often quite costly. At a minimum, dental coverage should pay for emergencies. This type of coverage would often have a very low monthly premium.
